Fix the route first
Face the way home before the steal. Extra speed cannot remove a fence, corner or player blocking the only exit.
Test the treadmill
If the route was clean but the Guard closed the gap, movement speed is the most relevant confirmed upgrade path.
Protect the lane
The official listing confirms the bat can make other thieves drop their chickens. Use it to recover a route, not as a substitute for one.
Speed is not the bottleneck
If clean escapes end at a full pen, capacity—not movement—is limiting the next successful steal.
